COMMON SHOCKWAVE THERAPY QUESTIONS

Question: How will shockwave therapy benefit me?
Answer: Shockwave therapy may be useful if you have chronic pain and if you find that your range of motion has decreased, or if you have pain due to past injuries, muscles that are in constant spasm, tendonitis, or plantar fasciitis.
*Treatments are specifically tailored to meet your needs.*

Question: How often will I need treatments?
Answer: Your body will let you know. Some people require only a few sessions to treat a specific problem, while others become regular users of shockwave therapy as preventative healthcare. Shockwave therapy can help maintain good muscle tone and flexibility and help correct muscular injuries.

Question: How old does a person need to be to receive shockwave therapy?
Answer: Any age. Shockwave can safely be done on most people.  There are definitely some conditions that are contraindicated however such as if a patient has known blood clots, coagulation disorders (hemophilia), tumors, or open lesions on the skin.

Question: Which regions of my body get shockwave?
Answer: The therapist will ask you what you want to get out of the session. You will also be asked to describe any chronic problems that you are experiencing. This will determine the appropriate regions of your body that need attention.

Question: Will I experience muscle soreness following a treatment?
Answer: Most people report significant relief from aches, pains, and stress after a session. However some people, especially those who require shockwave experience mild muscle soreness which may last a day or two. Once the soreness is gone, they often notice heightened energy levels and an increased range of motion.

Question: I'm not sure I'm comfortable with a stranger touching me.
Answer: It is not uncommon for first-time clients to be apprehensive about the personal nature of shockwave therapy. Most clients lose this apprehension within the first few minutes of treatment. Massage therapists are trained professionals who respect your feelings and go out of their way to allow you to feel comfortable. Most shockwave treatments will be done over clothing and there may be no need to undress.

Question: How long will the sessions be?
Answer: Shockwave appointments will vary depending on the area in which you require treatment. The initial appointment will include an assessment of your posture and chief complaint, then treatment with the shockwave machine followed up with a few final assessment tests. This appointment may last up to forty-five minutes but could be less depending on the area being worked on.  The follow-up treatments will include assessments, shockwave treatment then final movement assessments. This may only take thirty minutes.

Question: Will my extended healthcare plan cover the costs of shockwave therapy treatments?
Answer: Yes. Our shockwave therapy treatments are under the category of "massage". Most extended healthcare plans include massage therapy and our office may be able to offer direct billing however, some plans ask you to first receive a physician's prescription to be covered.  Check with your insurance benefits provider if unsure.
